The Tugela River flows from the towering heights of the Drakensberg Mountains, and meanders 502 kilometres through the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands to the Indian Ocean. This river offers spectacular scenery, fascinating Boer War history, serious white water and enough adventure material to keep the adrenalin pumping for a good while!

Famed for being the largest river on the South Coast, the Umkomaas has its source at Giant's Castle in the Berg. Also well-known for the gruelling 67km Umkomaas Canoe Marathon, you too can take advantage of the wild waters from the vantage of an inflatable croc.

The Mkomazi River boasts Grade 3 rapids, which step-up to Grade 4 if there's been sufficient rain. The section from Daisy Chain to Lower Nkonka is regarded as some of the biggest traversable white-water south of the Zambezi. Just 90min from Durban and 1hr from PMB, a rafting trip on the Umko makes a great corporate team-build or day-trip adventure.

Mind the crocs

After summer rains, the still pools of the Tugela River turn into an exciting stretch of white water. From our bush camp, nestled in the heart of the Tugela Canyon, there is a 20km stretch of rapids and pools on which the SA white water rafting champs have been hosted. Water levels rise and fall, with 8 and 4-man rafts used in higher volumes whilst the two man crocs and kayaks are ideal for lower levels.
