Fifty-five years ago on the 9th of August, 20 000 women marched through the streets of Pretoria to protest the “pass” laws. They marched together, and they delivered over 100 000 signatures to the Union Buildings where they sang Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo!’ - Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock. And rocks are some of my favourite things.

I thought about this piece of history when I went to the shops on Women’s Day morning, and I greeted the cashier with a big grin and a ‘HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY!’ She smiled and looked a little disconcerted, and aside from maybe thinking I was a few drinks down by 8am on a Tuesday morning, I reckon she liked the sentiment.
